Days 11 and 12 Quick Stats

The plan: Check out our full road trip plan here

Starting point: Penn Yan, New York
Ending point: Falmouth, Massachusetts

Miles driven: 535 miles
Hours travelled: 11:41 a.m. to 9:20 p.m.

Cool things along the way: New York wine country, actual horse and carriages used around town, Watkins Glen State Park, Shining Sea Bikeway, lobster melt at Woods Hole

The second best gorge I’ve ever hiked

Earlier this summer I got the opportunity to hike my first gorge: the Oneonta Gorge (with my wife, my sister, and her fiancé).

This morning I got to hike another: The Gorge Trail at Watkins-Glen State Park. It felt kind of like I was Frodo carrying the ring towards Mordor, except everything was beautiful and living instead of black and dead.

The real New York or just the better New York?

About 10 years ago I got to visit New York City, take a stroll through Times Square and Central Park, and see a Yankees game before they moved to the new stadium. But today I feel like I actually got to see the real New York.

After seeing the beauty of upstate New York yesterday, we drove through other parts of the countryside in central and even southern New York. It’s amazing that almost 20 million people live in New York and so few seem scattered across most of the state.

At one point I’m pretty sure we drove through a predominantly Amish town, unless someone else is trying to bring back the horse and carriage.

I officially understand the common love of Cape Cod

We finally reached Cape Cod just after sunset, and what seemed like days of driving. I collapsed at our motel, the Capewind Waterfront Resort pretty excited about our plans to explore the Cape tomorrow.

The first thing we did after a good night’s rest, our first since the infamous Howard Johnson disaster of 2015, was to check out the view behind our motel.

A lobster melt and a bike ride

Next we were off to walk through one of the coolest towns I’ve been to in a long time: Woods Hole (just across from Martha’s Vineyard).

My wife was dead set on anything involving lobster, so we stopped off at Fishmonger’s cafe for a lobster melt and fish and chips.

The Shining Sea Bikeway

For the first time this trip the weather was nice enough to use the bikes we decided to carry with us.

The awesome views and autumn colors were incredible, but the best part was seeing a pair of trumpeter swans make their way around a local lake

The obligatory lighthouse

What’s Cape Cod without seeing one of the famous lighthouses? I guess we’ll never know because we stopped by Nobska Light on our way out. Nothing too exciting, but definitely worth it.
