I’ve done several interviews lately and I thought it would be fun to answer some questions that no one has really asked yet. So, here are 25 things you probably didn’t know about me.
1. I used to have long hair.
2. If I had to choose a motto I’d go with what my father used to always tell me: “Where this is a will, there is a way.” (also Col. 3:23)
3. I would do just about anything for a Ben & Jerry’s chocolate fudge brownie milkshake.
4. My favorite super hero is either Flash or Green Lantern.
5. On Thursday and Friday night you will likely find me at the nearest Regal Cinemas Theater. I’ll even sit through bad movies, thanks in part to MoviePass. (You can check out a list of my favorite movies here)
6. The best book I’ve read recently is Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
7. No matter where I go you’ll find a Gerber Paraframe Knife clipped to my left pocket. Yes, I even took one to the airport by accident (that was a fun day).
8. I’m a little obsessed with tracking pretty much everything. I use my FitBit and MyFitnessPal daily. I also have spreadsheets that track things like how many hours I write, amount of sleep, how much I workout, money spent on gas or groceries, and so on. If you can think of it, I’m probably tracking it.
9. I won intramural championships in men’s volleyball, co-ed softball, and men’s softball. Got really close in co-ed football and 3 on 3 basketball. When you wear a championship shirt around UF, people will actually walk up and talk to you about it.
10. My favorite foods are country fried steak, dressing (as in for Thanksgiving), corn casserole, and twice baked potatoes. But I probably eat more fried chicken than anything else.
11. I was the first person in the state of Florida to get a 6.0 on the Florida Writes test, in 4th grade.
12. I have a proclivity for breaking windows. Threw baseball threw my dad’s rear car window, hit a tennis ball through my bathroom window, kicked a soccer ball through my parents bedroom window, and threw a rock through a friend’s front house window.
13. In middle school my math teachers wanted me to drop out of honors math because I struggled. I then went on to graduate summa cum laude with a Master’s in Engineering.
14. I’ve skied the Swiss Alps.
15. I can recite every president of the United States in order.
16. I’ve only broken two bones: my pinky toe on my right foot and my pinky on my left hand.
17. I designed my wife’s engagement ring. #theycallmeengineer
18. I don’t enjoy roller coasters or ice cream, but I like theme parks and frozen yogurt. No, I can’t explain that.
19. You know those basketball hoops at fairs that you can win a stuffed animal for making a shot? I’ve won…twice.
20. One of my favorite places in the world is the Boardwalk at Disney. You can walk over to Disney’s Yacht Club and sneak into the pool area. There is sand in the pool!
21. The longest plane ride I’ve ever been on was 16.5 hours (non-stop) to Johannesburg, South Africa.
22. If I could wear this shirt everyday, I would.
23. When I was about five I ripped the toe nail off my big toe on my right foot while trying to hold the door open for my grandmother.
24. I can fall asleep anywhere within about 2 minutes.
25. I wear all my socks inside out.

Wait a sec, how do you love Ben & Jerry’s milkshakes and not like ice cream?? And please tell me you didn’t like the Green Lantern movie with Ryan Reynolds. Otherwise, I’m sorry, but we can’t be friends. 😉 j/k. Great post. Your fans will enjoy it.
Wesley Banks says
I can’t explain it, but when people find out I don’t like ice cream they think I’m crazy. I’m like the worst person to get movie recommendations from because I knowingly like bad movies. But no, I didn’t like the Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds…I loved it! I actually watched it again the other day 🙂
Jared Paulson says
Hey Wes. I am so proud of all that you have done and on the new book. Can’t wait for manyore to come.
Wesley Banks says
Thanks Jared!
We need to catch up next time I’m back in Florida.

Nance says
Now a big time fan of yours after reading “Hope in Every Raindrop”. One of my favorite books and have been an avid reader since I was,a kid. The fact you didn’t know is I am now 81 and one of those seniors.
Wesley Banks says
Nance,
Thanks so much! I honestly get happy when I meet people that have enjoyed reading their entire lives. I can’t imagine a life without books 🙂
Dot ainsworth Day says
Loved Hope in Every Raindrop-a little romance, a little suspense, many dogs, knowledge about a new subject. After a lifetime of teaching and doing family therapy, I’m in process of writing. I hope to steal ideas from your blog to make mine better. i have an email from you asking about what I am reading. I have finished Clare Mackintosh’s book “I Let You Go”; if you have not read it, I recommend it. Character also has a dog-a Bitza–bits of this, bits of that. Reminds me of Celina Grace’s police procedurals with many twists. It is worth the effort to get the copy from UK.
Wesley Banks says
Thanks for the recommendation Dot. I’ve been looking for some good fiction lately. Also, glad you liked Hope 🙂
Sherrie says
I am so happy to find that one other person in the world who wears their socks inside out. My family has always made fun of me for doing that, but I find the seams and sometimes the textures of the inside of socks to be annoying. Hope in Every Raindrop was one of the few books I’ve read that didn’t take me weeks to finish. Thanks for writing it.
Wesley Banks says
Sherrie,
It’s the seam at the end (near the toes) that just drives me crazy 🙂
Sherrie says
Yep
Mary Lynn Roush says
Fun List. I saw your FB post looking for photos to use on a book about Yukon Quest, and got intrigued. Anyone who loves dogs is ok in my book, even if they don’t like ice cream. I think I need to check out your first book.
I’m a huge fan of the Yukon Quest/Iditarod/sleddogs!
Wesley Banks says
Mary Lynn,
If you love dogs, I think you’ll definitely love Hope In Every Raindrop. I’m also working on another book that is going to center around the Yukon Quest, albeit complete fiction.

One random fact about me would be that I recharge best when I’m at the sea. It’s just such a beautiful thing: calming, freeing, yet at the same time strong and resistant.
Wesley Banks says
So glad you liked it Priscilla!
I’m working on a prequel and sequel that will include elements of Faith and Love too 🙂

Impressive and accomplished random facts about you Wesley, especially enduring the travel on #21. Would appreciate some impressions from this trip, especially as ‘ye olde’ SA we know and love seem to move (politically, economically) into the realms of the ridiculous at warp speed, even as we speak .. interesting times
Seriously, after finishing #HopeInEvery I think you should not be allowed to move away from your writing environment . . keep at it and have Mrs Banks organize a tube-feed and do the necessary right t h e r e . . Writing is clearly your greatest accomplishment!
My random fact: (borrowing from YouKnowWho and paraphrasing 🙂 . . JustDoIt already!

Fact about me: Two years ago I took my dog and drove my little red Corolla 1700 miles from Louisville, KY to Key West. Stayed 3 weeks, slept in my car, which fascinated the County police department. I celebrated my 80th birthday at Sloppy Joe’s with a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Tent camped 2 nights on a very small island 75 miles out in the Gulf (Dry Tortugas National Park). My dog was by my side, protecting me, and even enjoyed the ferry boat ride except when the waves got rough. Great adventure – I hated to go home!
