5 Things from My Grandparent’s House that Made Me Nostalgic

When was the last time you took a stroll down memory lane? For me it was about nine months ago when I stayed at my grandparent’s house over Thanksgiving.

It was the first time I’d ever stayed at my grandparent’s house alone (my Nana now stays in assisted living), and while it felt a little sad to realize how much time has slipped by, it was also very nostalgic.

As I walked through the house I started to notice objects that I no longer saw in other houses. I thought about my childhood and growing up. I thought about the good ol’ days and realized they were just that: good.

Remember when you had to sharpen pencils?

I still keep one of those tiny twist-n-sharp ones in my desk at home because I still prefer real pencils. You know, the ones made of wood instead of plastic? But my grandparents had the old school big honkin’ pencil sharpener that used to hang from the walls of every classroom.

Old School Pencil Sharpener

Timeless books

To this day How to Win Friends and Influence People is still commonly on Amazon’s best-seller lists. My grandfather also happened to have a dog-eared copy on his bookshelf (which now resides among a few other books I love in my nightstand).

Hand painted portraits

Yep, that’s my mom. Can you imagine a time when hand painted portraits were more popular than ones shot with an iPhone?

Childhood Portrait

Home phones (with cords!)

There’s a funny scene in the new movie trailer for Neighbors 2 about corded phones, and how young people don’t even know what they are. It wasn’t there anymore, but I’ll never forget dialing on a rotary phone.

Typewriters

When I was in third grade I wrote a report about Triceratops…on a typewriter. My mom taught me how to type on that typewriter, and I’ll never forget how painful it was. Erasing misspelled words was not fun, haha.

Over to you

Do you still keep any outdated items laying around the house? Let me know in the comments below.

Wesley, I still have one of those old pencil sharpeners! Still the best! I, too, use wooden pencils to this day. I have a couple pairs of my grandfather’s wire rimmed reading glasses and his rack of poker chips. Marbles I used to play with in their attic when I was young! I am definitely a sentimentalist!!????????

HI Wesley, I still have the old fashioned pencil sharpener hanging in my utility room..I still like wooden pencils. I have and use old lace doilies(you probably don’t know those) from my grandmother’s house. I have a table that I keep some of my mom’s stuff like her glasses, jewelry, bible and hat and a poem read at my dad’s funeral. Sentimental?
